Jumping the Broom
A very old tradition that was practiced in Ireland and Scotland and a great Romany tradition. In Scotland the couple would have to jump over the broom which was leaned across the doorway of their new home. If they could cross the threshold without knocking the broom over this was a good omen for their life ahead. If they were not able, they were in for stormy seas ahead. Jumping the broom has found new popularity with couples using customised decorated brooms and hanging them in their homes afterward as keepsakes. It can be done as part of the recessional down the aisle.
